Weeks of New Beginnings

Over the last three weeks, my second year as an apprentice at 3to1 Games began. During the first week, I spent time preparing to pitch my game Voidsinger to the other members of the studio. Much time was also spent on familiarizing myself with the new studio space and its new members as well as on setting up the software.

In the second week, many pitches were made to the entire studio, including my own game. My pitch garnered interest from 5 coders however no artist joined the team. Despite this, my game was approved for production on the condition that my team outsources our art.

The third week has been mostly spent teaching the basics of unreal to the 3 newbie programmers on the team; however, work on Both the physics and building systems has made decent progress.

My Game: Voidsinger

The Premise:

Voidsinger is a 2D rogue-lite spaceship building and combat sim. It would have a strong exploration section where the player will explore an ancient galaxy where they will encounter both friend and foe. There will be a large focus on systemic gameplay with its physics-based building system and combat as well as through the dynamic factions that inhabit the galaxy.

The Pitch:

For my pitch, I created a slideshow and presented it to the studio, and then proceeded to discuss the details of the game. I believe that my pitch was too long and failed to catch the attention of many due to its slow start and because too many details were given. Despite this, many in the studio showed interest. I then went about recruiting for my team, but I ran into difficulty because one of the other games that were pitched gained the attention of nearly all of the artists in the studio. Because of this, I was unable to recruit any artists but my team of 5 coders was approved nonetheless.

Here is a link to the presentation I made for my pitch.

The Team:

The team that I recruited consists of:

  • Myself - Project Lead/Manager, Designer, Programmer

  • Mabel Reed - Programmer, Music Producer, Sound FX Producer

  • Zach Schultheis - Programmer, Designer

  • Cole Ward - Designer, Programmer

  • Zach McCarthy - Programmer
