Demons & Dice

Demons & Dice is a maze escape game where you rely on your luck with dice to break through walls. This game was created for the GMTK Game Jam 2022 which had the theme of Roll of the Dice.

Note: The recording software I used recorded at a much lower framerate than the game was running at.

My Involvement

I was the designer for the game as well as the programmer for the terrain generation, dice systems, and some of the traps. I also spent much of the jam doing art pipeline management.

Jam Post Mortem

I think that the game turned out decently considering the time contains and schedule mismatches. It was decently fun and addicting and I think the concept, while not revolutionary, was decently unique and fit the theme well. The biggest problem with the game is that the art for the game was neither cohesive in style nor complete. The gameplay could also feel a bit unfair due to the heavy incorporation of chance in the game, and lack of time to playtest/balance.

 

Most of the people on the team for this jam I had never worked with before and even so, I think the game turned out really well and communication was decent although there were some issues communicating art direction due to misaligned schedules.

 

I also used this jam as an opportunity to test out the usability of my procedural tool. Overall the tool performed well although there were a few small bugs.

 

There were also issues with the art pipeline due to several of the artists not being able to use Unreal. In the future, we should check that the whole team has the correct software downloaded and working before the jam starts.
